What is a Wall

Collection of Audio Interviews & Urban Spectacle 2004
Spectacle for an Urban Community, Dublin 8.
What is a Wall was a live event; a spectacle for an urban community in inner city Dublin. It developed from a series of audio interviews that highlighted contested interpretations amongst with local stakeholders in an area of redevelopment in inner city Dublin. The interviewees were invited to physically meet with the opposing arguments by assembling together at a pedestrian crossing at an appointed hour. The audience/participants assembled at a pedestrian crossing at the invitation of the artist. Along the street were ‘Site Notices’ which were also printed as flyers and distributed during the event by the artist to inform the public about the event and the inquiry that led to its inception.
On the hour, the gathered audience witnessed the collaboration between the workers of two construction sites with the artist to literally raise the question over the street by crane.
‘What is a Wall’ lead to the project ‘Forum’ which was exhibited in June 2005.
